WHEN TO SEE A DENTIST FOR WISDOM TEETH ISSUES

Request Appointment

Wisdom teeth, despite what their name would indicate, are not a blessing. Appearing between the ages of 17 and 21, they are what some believe to be an evolutionary relic of a time in our distant past when rough eating habits and poor dental hygiene caused premature tooth loss.

The third and last molars on each side of the upper and lower jaw would come in handy to replace lost and decayed teeth. Thankfully, healthy eating habits and the evolution of dentistry means we no longer need these so-called replacement teeth.

Unfortunately, we don’t have enough room in our mouths to accommodate these extra teeth and by the time they are causing pain, the damage may have already been done.

It’s always best to prevent the potential problems caused by wisdom teeth by asking your family dentist in Calgary SE & SW at Sundance Dental. We’ll be able to determine if you should have them removed before they have a chance to grow in and cause permanent damage.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you may be having a dental emergency:

  • Pain or jaw stiffness
  • Infection
  • Damage to adjacent teeth
  • Crowding of other teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Cysts

Complications associated with wisdom teeth can have severe repercussions on your oral and general health. The most common problem associated with wisdom teeth is pain. Pain caused by an infection can be felt along the jaw, ear, and throat, as well as the side of the face where the impacted tooth is located. More importantly, the bacteria caused by an impacted wisdom tooth can enter your blood stream and spread throughout your body, which can negatively impact your organs and overall health.

The pressure caused by wisdom teeth that are growing in at an awkward angle can cause your other teeth to shift, thereby interfering with the integrity of your bite and causing additional pain and discomfort. Wisdom teeth can also put undue pressure on your jaw joints, which can aggravate an underlying temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and weaken your jaw, putting you at risk of fractures.
