Request AppointmentWhy Are Teeth Extracted?
Our goal is to help make your natural teeth last a lifetime, but there are a number of different reasons a tooth may need to be removed. Tooth extraction may be necessary if other methods of restorative dentistry will not do the trick.
Reasons your dentist may recommend a tooth extraction include:
- An overcrowded mouth, especially when preparing for orthodontics
- Excessive tooth decay or infection
- A tooth is damaged beyond repair
- Gum disease causing a tooth to loosen
What to Expect from a Tooth Extraction
We understand our patients may feel nervous about a dental procedure and we want to help make you feel comfortable in our care. Our team of compassionate professionals can go over what to expect so you understand the process for maintaining a happy and healthy smile.
Preparing for a Tooth Extraction
Prior to the tooth extraction procedure, it’s important to discuss with your dentist your medical history and any medications you’re taking. At this time, we’re happy to answer any questions you have so you get a full understanding of what can be expected and ease any nervousness you may be feeling.
During the Tooth Extraction
To begin, your dentist administers local anesthesia to numb the treatment area. Once numb, your dentist loosens the tooth using specialized tools to remove it from the socket.
In some cases, a hard-to-pull tooth may be broken up into smaller pieces or an incision in the gum may be made to access the damaged tooth. After the tooth has been removed you may require a few stitches to close any incisions made.
Recovery from a Tooth Extraction
Recovering from a tooth extraction can take a couple of days. For a speedy recovery and to minimize your discomfort, you can:
- Use painkillers as recommended or prescribed by your dentist
- Apply ice to the treated area to reduce swelling
- Eat soft foods
- Continue to brush and floss your teeth, but avoid the extraction site
